An administrative region of Sylhet Division in the northeastern region of Bangladesh. From the legends and historical sources it is assumed that the entire area of Sunamganj district belonged to the ancient Kamrup or Pragjyotishpur kingdom. In 1877, Sunamganj district was elevated to a subdivision and in 1984, Sunamganj subdivision was elevated to a district. Boundaries: Khasia and Jaintia hills in the north, Sylhet district in the east, Habiganj district in the south, Netrakona and Kishoreganj districts in the west. Area: 3,669.58 sq km. Location: 24°34' to 25°12' North latitude and 90°56' to 91°49' East longitude. Population: 2013738; Male-1036678, Female-977060. Muslim-1715033, Hindu-294765, Buddhist-2843, Christian-136 and others-961. Manipuri, Khasia, Hajong, Garo etc. tribal people live in this district. Major rivers of the District: Surma, Kushiara, Dhamalia, Jadukata, Bagra, Dahuka, Someswari, Bauli.
